The Greystones, Sheffield
Acclaimed Canadian roots duo Pharis & Jason Romero made a big impact when they first toured the UK in 2015, performing at Celtic Connections festival and appearing on BBC Radio’s World on Three. Their engaging blend of home made music combines the very best of contemporary and traditional, blending folk with acoustic Americana (Canadiana?) with gorgeous harmonies, superb original songwriting and exquisite musicianship on acoustic guitar and banjo. The duo has released several highly praised albums, including 2018’s Sweet Old Religion, an all-original record that reflects over a decade of playing together. Pharis and Jason also won two Canadian Folk Awards in December 2018.
As well as being exceptional musicians, Pharis and Jason are talented artisans. Jason Romero is a respected luthier making highly sought after banjos, and the couple run the Romero Banjo Company from their remote homestead in Horsefly, British Columbia. Tragedy struck in summer 2016 when their banjo shop burned to the ground in the night, and they barely escaped with their lives and their two small children. Their home and business was lost, including several priceless old guitars and a number of newly completed Romero banjos awaiting shipment. The experiences of rebuilding their lives, and support from their local (and wider musical) community, have fed into the outstanding new songs showcased on Sweet Old Religion.
We’re looking forward to welcoming Pharis and Jason to the Greystones for what is sure to be a stellar night of beautiful music!
