Tuesday 31st May 2022
The Greystones, Sheffield
Jake Blount is an award-winning young artist whose debut solo album Spider Tales was released in 2020 to widespread acclaim. An exceptional banjoist and fiddler, and powerful, soulful singer, Jake was also one of the winners of the 2020 Steve Martin Banjo Prize. Jake’s work shines a light on the major contributions that Black, Indigenous and LGBTQ artists have made to American folk and traditional music. He’s also an absolutely mesmerising live performer. Jake has studied with roots music luminaries including Rhiannon Giddens and Bruce Molsky, and has shared his music and research at Newport Folk Festival and the Smithsonian Institution, among many other prestigious venues. He’ll be performing with his own sensational stringband, which includes George Jackson (fiddle, banjo), Nelson Williams (bass) and Gus Tritsch (guitar), all super talented in their own right. Expect a captivating blend of old time fiddle tunes, evocative jazz and blues songs and footstomping folk-Americana and bluegrass.
Opening the show will be the superb duo Vivian Leva & Riley Calcagno with their exquisite blend of folk, Americana, country and bluegrass. Viv and Riley specialise in compelling songs, gorgeous singing and fine musicianship (on guitars, fiddle and clawhammer banjo). Their debut album (released 2021) was produced by acclaimed Grammy-winning Cajun musician Joel Savoy. Vivian grew up in Virginia, going to fiddle festivals with her parents, both acclaimed roots musicians. At nine years old she began writing songs and performing with her father James Leva. Her debut solo album Time Is Everything was released in 2018, and she was named in a Rolling Stone feature as one of the top ten country artists to watch. Riley has also been immersed in traditional music from an early age. Originally from Seattle, his musical skills span fiddle, banjo, guitar, mandolin and voice. Riley is a founding member of The Onlies, an acclaimed young stringband formed when he was just eight years old! Riley has performed with luminaries including Elvis Costello, Rhiannon Giddens, Bruce Molsky, Altan and Dirk Powell, to name just a few.
