Bringing you world class live music and virtual events, featuring the very best in Americana, bluegrass, folk and roots
Maria Wallace has been successfully promoting concerts under the True North Music banner since early 2015. Based in Yorkshire, we specialise in Americana, bluegrass, old time, folk & roots. The ongoing pandemic has been a hammer blow for everyone working in live music and the arts. While we cannot safely gather together in person, we all need music and community more than ever, and Maria is passionate about continuing to keep the flame of live music burning! We were planning to host our first one-day festival this year, which sadly had to be postponed to 2021. In the absence of this and our planned 2020 music series, Maria organised the Fall into Autumn Virtual Festival in October with the support of Arts Council England funding. It featured two live streamed evening concerts as well as virtual workshops in songwriting, bluegrass guitar and percussive dance, and was a big hit with our followers locally, nationally and internationally. The project will also include two live streamed concerts in February and March 2021, filmed in our local community venue The Carlile Institute – stay tuned for more details on those events!
Over the past six years we have hosted over 50 gigs in Yorkshire featuring exceptional artists from the USA, UK and Canada, including Molly Tuttle, Jaywalkers, Sierra Hull, the April Verch Band, Mishra, Cahalen Morrison & Eli West, Laura Cortese & the Dance Cards and Foghorn Stringband to name just a few. Since expanding into booking work, True North Music has brought top flight roots music artists to venues across the UK, booking tours for Bill and the Belles, Mile Twelve, Front Country, John Reischman & the Jaybirds, AJ Lee & Blue Summit, The Slocan Ramblers, Newberry & Verch and many more. Visit True North Music’s booking agency site for more details. Both in programming and tour booking, achieving a fair level of gender parity is very important to True North Music. Check out the #keychange page at our booking website.
Maria won the Outstanding Promoter award at the 2017 Yorkshire Gig Guide Grassroots Awards, and was a finalist in 2019. She was invited to the USA in 2018 by arts organisation South Arts to participate in the Performing Arts Discovery: American Sounds programme (PADAS) and travelled to Nashville in 2019 to participate in the prestigious Leadership Bluegrass course run by the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA). These opportunities have been invaluable in building True North Music’s network of world class artists and music industry contacts. With a professional background in marketing and communications, Maria has been active in the bluegrass, old time and folk/roots music community in the UK for well over a decade – as a singer, songwriter, musician, volunteer and fan, in addition to her professional work as a promoter and agent. Maria is passionate about roots music and the relationships she has built along the way have helped True North Music bring some of the finest acoustic music artists to her local community and the rest of the UK.
After running all her events completely independently for five years, in 2020 Maria was successful in both her first and second applications for Arts Council England funding (Project Grants: Supporting Grassroots Live Music strand). True North Music has been awarded funding both to run the first Yorkshire Americana & Bluegrass Day festival (postponed to summer 2021) and for our winter 2020/21 virtual festival and live streamed concerts. We are extremely grateful for this vital support which is helping us to continue to support grassroots artists and present outstanding live music to our audiences.
